AI Engineer at Aligne Technologies Ltd, London Canary Wharf/Remote, £Freelance Rate

Contract Description

We are looking for an AI Engineer who pairs strong hands-on engineering with excellent communication skills and a real appetite for working directly with the business. You will work closely with users across different teams, connect new tools and data sources into the agentic platform, help people get genuine value from it, and turn repetitive manual work into reliable automations. This is a business-facing engineering role, where success is measured as much by adoption and user outcomes as by the code you ship.

Key responsibilities

Integration and new data sources

  • Design, build and maintain integrations that connect internal tools and data sources to AI agents in a secure, reliable and well-documented way.
  • Onboard new tools and data sources end to end, covering discovery with the business, access and entitlements, data mapping, tool design, testing, documentation and release.
  • Build and curate knowledge sources, including documentation, reference data and business context, so agents respond with the right context for each team.
  • Ensure integrations meet business controls, including appropriate access permissions, clear separation of read and write actions, user confirmation before changes, and full auditability.
  • Monitor integration health, performance and cost, and resolve issues quickly.

Business enablement and user support

  • Act as a first point of contact for users across the business, triaging questions, issues and feature requests and resolving them quickly.
  • Onboard new users and teams through demos, training sessions and drop-in clinics, and produce clear guides, examples and best practices tailored to different user groups.
  • Work side by side with users to understand their workflows, pain points and terminology, and translate these into clear integration and automation requirements.
  • Gather feedback and usage insights and use them to shape the platform roadmap with product and engineering leads.

Workflow automation

  • Identify high-value, repetitive workflows such as reporting, reconciliations, monitoring, alerting and data movement, and turn them into reliable automations.
  • Build reusable skills and templates that business users can run themselves, reducing reliance on bespoke engineering work.
  • Measure the impact of automations, including time saved, errors avoided and adoption, and continuously improve them.

Quality, safety and governance

  • Design evaluations and test cases for agent behaviour and tool usage, and monitor accuracy and regression risk as models, prompts and integrations change.
  • Apply the organisation’s standards for information security, data privacy, AI governance and change management, ensuring confidential and commercially sensitive information is handled appropriately.
  • Maintain clear technical and user-facing documentation for every integration and automation delivered.

Collaboration and communication

  • Build strong working relationships with business users, technology teams and control functions, communicating clearly and confidently with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Manage expectations and priorities across multiple stakeholders, explaining trade-offs, timelines and risks in plain language.
  • Work within an agile team, contributing to planning, reviews and continuous improvement.

Essential experience

  • Strong software engineering experience in C#/.NET, building production-grade services and integrations.
  • Hands-on experience building applications with large language models, for example tool and function calling, agentic workflows, retrieval-augmented generation, prompt design and evaluation.
  • Proven experience integrating systems through APIs and data platforms, including REST, authentication, streaming, SQL and cloud data services.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with demonstrable experience working directly with business users on requirements, training, support and influencing.
  • A user-centric, pragmatic mindset, comfortable in a fast-paced business environment and focused on what delivers value to users.
  • Experience with modern engineering practices, including source control, CI/CD, automated testing, code review and cloud deployment on AWS.

Desirable experience

  • Experience in trading, energy or financial services environments, with an understanding of trading, risk and operations workflows.
  • Experience with workflow automation, scheduling and event-driven architectures.
  • Experience building simple dashboards or data visualisations.
  • Experience running training, user communities or change management activities for new technology.
  • Awareness of responsible AI practices and AI governance.

Job Type: Freelance

Application question(s):

  • Have you designed, built and deployed production solutions on AWS?
  • Have you integrated multiple data sources into a single platform using APIs, streaming or SQL?
  • • Hands-on experience building applications with large language models, for example tool and function calling, agentic workflows, retrieval-augmented generation, prompt design and evaluation

  • United Kingdom (required)
