Junior Business Analyst - Data Governance at Department for Education, Remote/Coventry, 6 Months, £Contract Rate

We are seeking a Junior Business Analyst - Data Governance to support the implementation, embedding and adoption of data governance practices across the Department.

Working closely with the Data Governance Lead Manager, Data Owners, Data Stewards and delivery teams, you will play an important role in improving the quality, trustworthiness and management of data within the Department 's Delta Lake environment. You will help identify opportunities for improvement, analyse business processes, document requirements and support the development of governance capabilities that enable effective and compliant use of data.

Key Responsibilities

Business Analysis

• Engage with stakeholders to understand business processes, data requirements and governance challenges.
• Gather, analyse and document business requirements, ensuring data governance needs are incorporated into project and operational activities.
• Produce process maps, business workflows, requirements documentation and user stories where appropriate.
• Analyse existing data management processes and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Support the implementation of governance changes through effective stakeholder engagement and communication.

Data Governance

• Support the implementation and adoption of data governance frameworks, policies, standards and controls across the Department.
• Help maintain and improve governance artefacts including metadata, business glossaries, data lineage and data ownership records.
• Monitor, review and support activities to improve data quality across data products and services.
• Assist Data Owners and Data Stewards in carrying out their governance responsibilities and meeting organisational standards.
• Support the establishment and tracking of data management competencies, governance metrics and accountability measures.
• Ensure governance processes align with departmental policies, standards and regulatory requirements.
• Contribute to the identification and management of data-related risks and issues.

Essential Criteria

• Experience of business analysis, requirements gathering and process mapping.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret and communicate complex information.
• Experience engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and building effective working relationships.
• Ability to document processes, requirements and governance activities clearly and accurately.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
• An interest in data governance and data management, with a willingness to develop expertise in this area.

Desirable Criteria

• Experience working in a data, analytics or information management environment.
• Knowledge of data governance principles, including metadata, data lineage, business glossaries and data quality management.
• Experience supporting governance or business change initiatives.
• Familiarity with data governance tools and data catalogues.
• Experience of working with Databricks or similar cloud-based data platforms.
