Job purpose

We are seeking a Data Governance Lead with hands-on Microsoft Purview experience to advance data governance across the organisation as part of the Data Architecture and Governance team within the Data & Analytics directorate.

This role combines strategic governance leadership with practical implementation, with a focus on unstructured data, data quality and metadata management.

You will work closely with Data Owners, Data Stewards and technical teams to embed strong data managementpractices and ensure the quality, integrity and visibility of data across the agency.

 

As a Data Governance Lead – Microsoft Purview, your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Lead the development and implementation of data governance frameworks, standards and policies
  • Drive improvements in data quality, integrity and control across structured and unstructured data
  • Work with business stakeholders to define data quality and business rules
  • Translate business rules into technical data quality specifications
  • Use Microsoft Purview to:
    • Implement data quality rules and monitoring
    • Manage metadata and data catalogues
    • Support data classification and governance policies
  • Carry out data profiling and analysis (e.g. SQL / Databricks) and validate outputs
  • Support setup and configuration of data governance tooling (e.g. data sources, integration runtimes, identities)
  • Collaborate with Data Owners, Stewards, DPO and Security teams to ensure governance and compliance
  • Establish and report on data governance metrics (accuracy, completeness, lineage, etc.)
  • Promote and advocate for data governance as a strategic priority across the organisation, driving adoption across business units

 

Essential:

  • Strong experience in data governance (frameworks, policy, stewardship and data quality)
  • Hands-onexperience using Microsoft Purview for:
    • Data quality monitoring and reporting
    • Metadata management / data cataloguing
  • Ability to define and implement data quality rules
  • Experience translating business rules into technical specifications
  • Strong data analysis skills (SQL or similar) and experience in data profiling
  • Proven ability to engage and influence business and technical stakeholders
  • Experience improving data quality, integrity and governance adoption

 

Desirable:

  • Experience working with Databricks or Azure data platforms
  • Experience configuring Purview environments (data source connections, managed identities, integration runtimes)
  • Exposure to unstructured data governance
  • Experience implementing data classification policies
  • Public sector experience
