Solution Architect – Application Modernisation

Duration: Initial 6 Months

Location: Reading (Hybrid)

Contract Type: Inside IR35 Day Rate

We’re looking for an experienced Solution Architect to join a major application modernisation programme, providing architectural leadership across a diverse portfolio of business applications. You’ll guide modernisation, migration, and rationalisation activity using recognised 6R frameworks, ensuring solutions are scalable, supportable, and aligned to enterprise standards.

What You’ll Do

• Own and govern solution architecture for a defined portfolio of applications
• Apply application modernisation patterns (6Rs) to validate and refine treatment approaches
• Define as‑is, target, and transition architectures, including integrations, dependencies, hosting, and platform considerations
• Shape approaches for SaaS, COTS, and subscription‑based applications (tenancy, identity, access, data lifecycle)
• Ensure historical data is appropriately handled for audit, reporting, and regulatory needs
• Provide architectural oversight across shared platforms (data, low‑code, cloud)
• Produce solution blueprints, logical/physical architectures, and integration designs
• Ensure solutions meet non‑functional requirements: security, resilience, performance, compliance
• Present designs to Architecture / Technology governance forums
• Provide architectural assurance across internal teams and third‑party suppliers

What You’ll Bring

• Proven experience as a Solution Architect across complex application estates
• Strong understanding of application modernisation & rationalisation approaches
• Demonstrable experience applying 6R decision frameworks
• Excellent documentation, modelling, and architecture visualisation skills
• Strong stakeholder management and influencing capability
• Experience with enterprise applications, SaaS, subscription‑based solutions
• Solid understanding of data architecture, integration patterns, and governance
• Experience designing multi‑system, multi‑tenant architectures
• Familiarity with cloud platforms, low‑code platforms, and shared services (beneficial)
• 7+ years in IT engineering/design/architecture, 5+ years as a Solution Architect
