We are seeking contractors with Computing expertise and academic experience to deliver online modules. In this freelance module tutor role, you will support the learning of our online students who are studying with the University of Essex Online. Further information on our programmes can be found at https://online.essex.ac.uk/

 


There may also be opportunities to supervise dissertations and/or develop module content.

 

We are looking for individuals with experience in any of the following subject areas:


Computer Science – some of our modules include:

  • Launch into Computing

  • Secure Software Development in Computer Science

  • Information Retrieval

Data Science – some of our modules include:

  • Deciphering Big Data

  • Visualising Data

  • Machine Learning

Artificial Intelligence – some of our modules include:

  • Understanding Artificial Intelligence

  • Numerical Analysis

  • Intelligent Agents

Cyber Security – some of our modules include:

  • Network Security

  • Security Risk Management

  • Digital Forensics

Information Technology Management – some of our modules include:

  • Advanced Object-Oriented Design and Programming

  • Cloud Operations and Management

  • Research Methods and Professional Practice


Key Responsibilities

 


The primary role of the freelance module tutor is to lead and support the learning of the students, using the learning materials provided in the module. This will involve a number of duties, that might include, but are not limited to:

 


  • Leading online teaching sessions;

  • Holding office hours;

  • Monitoring and contributing to discussion forums;

  • Providing students with examples from your own practice;

  • Assessing and moderating both formative and summative assessments,

  • Providing appropriate feedback and advice to students;

  • Replying to student emails;

  • Responding to academic queries, including those based upon pre-existing module content.


If you are interested in undertaking supervision, this would include:

 

  • Meeting and supporting students as they work on their final projects/dissertations;

  • Marking and double-marking projects/dissertations.

 


If you are interested in undertaking content development work, this would include:

 

  • Creating lecturecasts;

  • Designing assessment;

  • Creating multiple choice questions and other formative activities.

 

 

Qualifications, experience and abilities

 


You will have academic experience and expertise in one or more of the relevant subject areas outlined above. Full details of criteria required are presented below.

 

Note that we typically look for contractors that can be a module tutor at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

 

Note that we would consider an application automatically for the module tutor role. There is also the option to be considered for supervision and/or content development.

 

Criterion (note that all criteria are essential unless otherwise stated)

 


  • Educated to PhD level or equivalent or have substantial industry experience in a field relevant to the Department (for postgraduate activities)

  • Educated to at least master’s level or equivalent in a field relevant to the Department

  • HE teaching qualification and/or Fellowship/Senior Fellowship/Principal Fellowship of AdvanceHE

  • A record of research and/or scholarly activity and/or industry experience (desirable)

  • Experience of HE teaching, including seminars/tutorials

  • Experience of using platforms such as Zoom/Teams to teach online and/or lead other activity (e.g. meetings) online

  • Experience of using a virtual learning environment or similar experience

  • Experience of HE assessment marking and moderation

  • Experience of HE dissertation / final year project supervision, including consideration of ethics forms (for supervision only)

  • Experience of developing HE content and assessment (for content development only)

  • Ability to mark appropriately and provide excellent feedback to students that supports learning

  • Ability to develop content that enhances learning and employability (for content development only)

  • Ability to be engaging within seminars and/or supervision meetings

  • Ability to appropriately assess ethics forms (for supervision only)

  • Ability to overcome challenges of online delivery

  • Ability to answer questions clearly

  • Ability to support students with their learning

  • Ability to encourage student input within seminars and/or supervision meetings

  • Specific departmental requirements: A PhD in a related area ( for supervision of MSc Major Projects ).

 


We can only consider candidates who are UK residents. UK residency typically means you must reside in the UK for at least 183 days per tax year.

 


Due to the freelance nature of this role, we cannot accept applications from candidates on a student visa (previously a tier 4 visa)

 


To undertake contractor work with Kaplan Higher Education UK, you would need to have a reliable internet connection, a personal laptop/PC with MS Edge, and a smart phone or device with MS Authenticator.

 



Application Process

Within your CV, please include details of the following:

 

  • Your qualifications (including postgraduate qualifications);

  • Your teaching qualifications and/or Advance HE fellowship level;

  • Your previous Higher Education experience;

  • Any research, scholarly activity and/or industrial experience.

 

There are three stages to the application process:

  • An application stage to consider criterion 1-10;

  • An activities stage (2-4 tasks) to consider criterion 11-14;

  • An interview to consider criterion 15-18.



The activities stage will consist of 2-4 tasks:

  • A marking exercise;

  • A video task;

  • An ethics task (for supervision only);

  • A content development task (for content development only).

 


We will assess the criteria at the appropriate stages of the process. If you are successful in a stage, you will be invited to take part in the next stage.

 

Interviews will take place on Thursday 14th May 2026. Note: if you are successful at the activities stage, you may not receive an interview invite until Friday 8th May (latest).

 


Contractor Onboarding

 


If you are successful at the interview stage, you will be invited to Contractor Onboarding, which will take place for one week from Tuesday 26th May 2026. Note that you are not required to be available for the entire week – the Contractor Onboarding can be undertaken at any time during the week. A contractor is required to undertake Contractor Onboarding before undertaking any other activities with Kaplan Higher Education UK.
