About Bristol Groundschool

Bristol Groundschool is a leading aviation training provider, delivering specialist digital learning platforms to pilots worldwide. Our software ecosystem includes ATPdigital, a Laravel-based CBT application, a large online question bank, an associated admin system, and an in-browser student portal.

As our digital products grow, we are strengthening our internal quality assurance capability. We now have an internal QA tester stepping up into a more senior role and are looking for an experienced QA professional to support and mentor them during this transition.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced freelance Senior QA Consultant to work with us on a short term temporary, part-time basis to help mature our QA processes and capability.

This is a hands-on advisory and coaching role, not a delivery or line-management position. You will work closely with our internal QA tester and development team, providing guidance, feedback, and best-practice recommendations to help them build confidence, structure, and ownership over QA activities.

This is a one day per week role and it is essential that you attend our Clevedon office on that day acting as a sounding board, reviewer, and mentor as our QA function evolves.

Key Responsibilities

Review existing QA processes, tooling, and workflows across our web applications.

  • Provide guidance on building and maintaining effective QA strategies and test plans.
  • Mentor and coach our internal QA tester, helping them grow into a QA Lead–level role.
  • Advise on appropriate use of manual vs automated testing.
  • Review test cases, documentation, and defect management practices, offering constructive feedback.
  • Support the team in understanding testing effort and resourcing needs.
  • Promote pragmatic, high-value QA practices suitable for a small development team.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Significant experience in SaaS QA, and with building QA teams
  • Proven Consultancy skills (ESSENTIAL)
  • Previous experience as a QA Lead, QA Manager, or Head of QA.(ESSENTIAL)
  • Experience with automated testing tools such as Cypress, Playwright, Selenium, or similar.
  • Experience working with small teams, building QA processes and scaling them for a growing SaaS business
  • Confident communicator with strong mentoring and coaching skills.

Desirable

  • Background in e-learning, content-heavy platforms, or regulated environments.
