Freelance Front-End WordPress Developer (12-Month Maternity Cover)

Location: North East England (with ad hoc in-person meetings at Blumilk HQ, Newcastle upon Tyne)
Contract: Freelance – Approx. 12 months (Maternity Cover)
Start Date: January 2026 (or sooner)

About the Role

Blumilk is an award-winning creative agency based in the North East, with over 25 years of experience helping brands connect, engage, and grow. We’re looking for a talented Freelance Front-End WordPress Developer to join our team on a maternity cover contract.

You’ll work closely with our design and digital teams to bring beautifully crafted, user-focused websites to life — using your WordPress expertise to deliver fast, responsive, and reliable solutions for our clients across the public and private sectors.

While much of the work can be completed remotely, you’ll need to be available to attend face-to-face meetings at our Newcastle studio on an ad hoc basis, particularly during live project phases.

What You’ll Do

• Develop, test, and maintain WordPress websites (custom themes and templates).
• Collaborate with designers to translate concepts into responsive front-end builds.
• Optimise sites for speed, accessibility, and SEO best practice.
• Support integrations with plugins and third-party tools.
• Provide troubleshooting and ongoing technical support during the contract period.

What We’re Looking For

• Proven experience building WordPress websites from the ground up.
• Strong HTML, CSS, JavaScript (ES6+), and PHP skills.
• Experience working with ACF, custom post types, and modern page builders (e.g. Elementor, Gutenberg).
• Understanding of UX/UI principles and responsive design.
• A proactive, detail-oriented developer who enjoys problem-solving and working collaboratively.
• Based in the North East of England with ability to attend in-person meetings in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Nice to Have

• Experience with hosting environments (e.g. cPanel, WP Engine).
• Familiarity with Git version control.
• Understanding of accessibility and WCAG compliance.
• Experience working with creative agencies or multiple client brands.
