dnata Travel Group are on the lookout for an ambitious Front-End Engineer, with the experience of improving technology, as well as user experience. You’ll be a part of our Development team working closely with product/programme management, infrastructure, architecture and UX teams, to deliver high quality robust solutions within agreed timeframes, all based in our Leyland office on a 6-month contract, hybrid basis.

As a Front-End Engineer, you will have a good working knowledge in browser and device capabilities, clientside frameworks.  A good communicator, with the ability to interface with non-technical teams and influence UX and design decisions.  Experienced at working within a fast paced, agile environment and comfortable with cross functional team structures.

dnata Travel Group, part of the Emirates Group, includes the brands of Gold Medal, Netflights, Travelbag, Travel Republic, and Sunmaster. These brands are based at offices across the UK including Preston (Leyland), Kingston-upon-Thames, Chester and Halifax.

The dnata Travel engineering team are responsible for the growth and evolution of in-house developed travel platforms and integrate with several 3rd party platforms. These platforms are being developed and rolled out across multiple brands, departments, and teams within the dnata Travel group.

You will be joining a smart, experienced, fast-moving team working in an agile environment, who continue to explore new technologies, tools & techniques to both grow the platforms and to service the growing needs of the business that the platforms support.



  • Write excellent code that is testable, efficient and can be easily followed by other team members.
  • Work closely with web designers, using semantic mark-up language i.e. HTML5/XTMTL/HTML/CSS, to turn their concepts and prototypes into working browser based web pages.
  • Work closely with the engineering teams to enrich their code in order to develop usable, interactive and data rich travel websites.
  • Ensure website presentation consistency across all popular browsers including IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari. Also ensure consistency on different revisions of these browsers.
  • Profile front end code. Understand inefficiencies in frameworks/techniques. 
  • Engineer code for the fastest page render and download times.
  • Consider SEO implications of web page structure and output. Optimise content delivery to accommodate modern search engine indexing.
  • Build rapid prototypes for user testing. Use modern frameworks and tools to assist in this process.
  • Develop responsive layouts based on the latest techniques. Build with a ‘mobile first’ approach.
  • Implement and understand ‘graceful degradation’. Ensure users receive an optimised experience across all browser types, devices and screen sizes.
  • Estimate development tasks and work closely with product owners and scrum masters to deliver website features.


  • Innovate using the latest browser based technologies. Suggest new ways of approaching problem solving.  Experiment with emerging frameworks and advise on adoption of new technologies.
  • Provide a technology road map, aligned with any product roadmaps, for front end development.


Qualification: Degree (or equivalent) in IT or related subject


  • CSS, across all major versions.
  • HTML, across all major versions.
  • React JS.
  • Good understanding of CSS pre-processors such as SASS or LESS.
  • Good understanding of responsive frameworks and their pro and cons. Bootstrap and MaterializeCSS being pre-requisites.
  • Fluent in Javascript and derived libraries.
  • Cross browser and device quirks. Good understanding of browser version capabilities. 
  • Optimising web page delivery for speed and user experience. Understanding of performance techniques: bundling, delayed asset loading and CDN techniques.
  • A solid understanding of how web applications work including security, networking, browser fundamentals, javascript.
  • Experience with workflows that support continuous delivery (agile, CI/CD, feature flags etc).
  • Working within an agile environment.
  • Source control including GIT and Mercurial.
  • Azure

Desirable Experience:

  • Google Material Design.
  • Experience of web development within an enterprise level company.
  • Experience of browser based monitoring/replay tools.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong analytical and diagnostic skills.
  • Front end web development to an advanced level.
