Contract Description

Legal & General are currently looking for a Head of Data Services who will drive the successful delivery of the LGR data platform and deliver on a number of key business outcomes to improve data across our business.



The role holder will lead on delivering the overall data strategy and lead on ensuring the data teams deliver the defined outcomes of our ongoing data programme and data investment strategy. They will also provide technical leadership and direction for the data engineering, data analysis and data operations capabilities and ensure we continue to mature all aspects of delivery and operational management of our business data services.



The successful candidate must have proven recent demonstrable experience in delivering complex data projects involving advanced data engineering techniques and technologies; be able to lead from the front in demonstrating best practice development methodologies and support the team in ensuring we deliver a best-in-class technology platform to meet our target objectives.



Principal Accountabilities

  1. Manage and maintain the team of data, integration, and analyst professionals to support the Technology & Transformation change and delivery portfolio. This will require resource demand estimation and capacity management planning to ensure that the capability remains optimally resourced - especially with third party resources.
  2. Low level data design and analysis; Collaborate very closely with the Group and Divisional Architecture teams to help define and understand the architecture-owned data strategy. This includes working closely with the Architecture Data Modelling resource to take their conceptual design through to implementation, thereby accountable for the physical data models that implement the conceptual models
  3. Knowledge: Accountable for the intellectual property of the low-level design of all data specific solutions including systems of insight/reporting and off the shelf (COTS) built ETL processes. Accountable for all development artefacts, low level design and delivery from our in house and 3rd party build partners.
  4. Define, deliver, and continually improve the strategic technical data implementation capability including core processes, tools and standards, including cloud-based technology and data science.
  5. Strategically deliver consistent data solutions that align to the Data Management Standards/Policies whilst balancing pragmatism towards improving business developed solutions, effectively manage end-of-life data solutions and retention.
  6. Continuous improvement: Rationalise high risk business developed applications into appropriately designed and controlled solutions. This will involve integration of knowledge, code, and documentation into the existing BAU framework and where applicable definition of revision to process.
  7. To take the lead in all matters with regard to the management of employees, ensuring that management discretion is used in a consistent manner and that the area follows the Group 's policies and procedures including the Partnership Agreement to maximise business performance.



Requirements

  • Extensive experience managing data delivery, gained in an enterprise FTSE 100 or 250 business. Ideally within the pension, insurance and/or banking industries.
  • Must have solid technical and leadership experience within data services (particularly Microsoft technologies), either within engineering or developer teams.
  • The technology capabilities are primarily built on the Microsoft Azure data ecosystem which include Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, Data Lake, ComsosDB and Elastic SQL. Additional knowledge of technologies such as AB Initio, IBM MQ, Azure APIM and would be beneficial.
  • The successful role holder will be a self-starter who is well versed in dealing with senior stakeholders, tight deadlines, and complex deliverables in an enterprise FTSE 100 business.
  • Demonstrable experience leading teams and providing intellectual thought leadership and domain expertise in this field is paramount.
  • Must be able to lead from the front and be able to work very closely with the engineering team on all technical matters as well as being able to clearly articulate and communicate complex technical concepts and challenges to senior stakeholders.
  • Proven background in adapting to trends and openness to new ideas.
  • Good team management skills, ability to develop and mentor individuals.
  • Strong organisational and change management skills and attention to detail, with a demonstrated ability to prioritise and work independently, managing a high-volume of tasks and deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to successfully engage and influence a broad range of individuals across various businesses and key support functions.
  • Track record of building effective relationships in complex environments.



Additional Information

  • Initially a temporary contract for 52 weeks, with a view to extend and/or ideally make permanent for the right candidate.
  • Day rate of up to £1100 (dependent on experience, inside of IR35 and uplifted rate of 18.55% will apply if going via an Umbrella company).
  • This will be a hybrid role based out of the L&G office in either London (One Coleman Street) or Hove.
