About the Job
The Speechmatics engineering teams have been using Scrum for several years and have experienced positive results more recently using Kanban implementations. We are looking for an experienced Lean and Agile practitioner to act as consultant and coach for multiple teams, helping to continuously drive improvements in a collaborative and pragmatic way.
You will teach, advise, coach and mentor the team Scrum masters, team leads and team members to help develop Agile maturity and self-organisation within the teams, sharing your experience with methods, practices, frameworks and metrics to drive optimisations and improvements. Where teams need greater support, you will work closely with them, embedding with the team for a time with the aim of moving from 'the front to the back of the room'. Strong coaching capabilities are desirable as is a pluralist, 'non-allegiant' mindset and approach. Moving fast and keeping it simple are key.
You will work with our product managers to ensure priorities and success measures are clearly communicated and will facilitate product definition through the creation and maintenance of a backlog driven by customer value.
Teams thrive in high-trust environments. Part of your job will be to help the teams work with the whole relationship system and connect to the right people to build a safe environment incorporating diversity, equity and inclusion and where conflict and mis-alignment can be raised and resolved effectively. You will also coordinate with other coaches at Speechmatics to instigate and drive continuous Agile improvements across the entire business.
Language processing research and development is a fundamental part of our business, previous experience of operating in a research environment or enabling fail-fast research projects is desirable.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the team Scrum masters to:
  • Educate and consult on Lean and Agile methods, practices and frameworks and facilitation techniques
  • Enable the forming, ongoing development and maturation of the team
  • Directly and in-directly coach the teams to foster self-organisation, collaboration, cross-functionality and continuous improvement
  • Advise on and enable the use of metrics to identify opportunities to maximise workflow and team health effectiveness
  • Support the creation and use of team assets in Jira and Confluence
  • Work with the product managers to:
  • Find techniques for effective product backlog refinement and management
  • Help the teams understand the benefits of small, focused product backlogs
  • Consult on effective methods to communicate vision, purpose and customer needs to the team
  • Advise on methods to curate product backlogs optimised for customer and business value
  • Foster a culture of laser-like focus on prioritisation and the MVP
  • Facilitate a focus on user research and testing, and Lean experiments
  • Proactively shape the release roadmap working in close collaboration with the release management team
  • Work with coaches to:
  • Serve the organisation through the leveraging of Agile principles
  • Consult with the organisation on systematic methods for identifying and driving business-wide improvements
  • Support and contribute to the ongoing development of an energetic, high-trust internal Agile community sharing knowledge, ideas and challenges
  • Consult with the organisation on methods for catalysing organisational change

Role Requirements
Essential

  • Comprehensive understanding of Agile and Lean principles and mechanics, with significant experience working as a Scrum master, Kanban facilitator or Agile coach in a commercial setting
  • Prior experience of forming, collaborating with and serving multiple technology teams in an Agile environment
  • Experience of creating and delivering workshops and learning assets
  • Excellent facilitation skills, able to facilitate in any context including large events
  • Strong coaching capabilities and experience, able to demonstrate the 'coaching stance' in differing situations
  • Understanding of how to apply mentoring and how to foster an ongoing relationship to meet the needs of the mentee
  • Ability to collaborate with teams with different technical skills as well as non-technical teams and individuals
  • Analytical with a data-driven approach to decision-making
  • Superb communication skills
  • Evidence of continuous personal development, learning and education

Desirable

  • Trained or certified in an ICF-accredited coaching framework
  • Knowledge and experience of professional software engineering practices for the full software development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
