Contract Description

Location: Currently home based (it would be good to be able access a DWP office in London, Leeds or Manchester if required during the contract)


Do you hold a valid and active SC Clearance alongside being an experienced Data Scientist? Are you experienced working with big data/large data sets and languages such as Python, SQL, R, Hadoop, Spark, Shell Script etc. If so PSR would like to speak to you!

Background: The UC Data team is a Data Science team co-located with the development teams that are designing and delivering new features for the Universal Credit digital service.

It exists to support service design and delivery of Universal Credit digital service using data and insights to support the Universal Credit programme’s main objectives, championing data-based decision making to improve outcomes for claimants.

As Data Scientist, you would: 

  • Be capable of tackling problems that are often loosely defined, with a passion and curiosity to ask great questions to truly understand what’s going on, and experience translating analysis into actionable recommendations.
  • Have strong stakeholder management skills and experience working with stakeholders across all grades to deliver results.
  • Have good written and verbal communicator with the ability to present complex ideas in a compelling way to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Be comfortable with Agile methodology and ability to manage work with changing user needs


Knowledge and Experience required:

  • A valid and active SC Clearance
  • Experience working with large or complex data sets including:

- identifying and gathering disparate data,

- extensive data manipulation,

- iteration of analytical techniques

- and visualisation of the results.

  • Experienced with Python, SQL, R, Hadoop, Spark, Shell Script etc.
  • Previous experience within a similar position
  • Strong stakeholder management experience



  • An understanding of and experience working with UCFS datasets is beneficial but not essential
  • Previous DWP or public sector experience
