Technical Architect – Inside IR35

Core Purpose
The Citizen Information product delivery unit (PDU) in DWP Digital are at the forefront of helping to deliver the DWP’s new strategic event driven architecture vision and are defining and developing a number of new shared application products that enable secure, appropriate, and effective use of the citizen’s data by the benefit application products to support the Citizen’s claim journey.
The strategy includes exploiting new data sources from across government and making better use of existing data to deliver operational efficiencies, reduce fraud and error, enable straight through processing within our digital services, and ultimately providing improved citizen journeys.
Solution Architects will lead the design of the new shared application products working closely with Domain and Enterprise Architects within DWP Digital to ensure alignment to the strategic Architecture Reference Model and Digital Blueprints.
Come and join the Citizen Information solution architect team that are working across a number of projects, in multi-disciplinary agile teams, delivering these new application products.

Summary of the Role and key responsibilities
The successful candidate will:

  • Design technical solutions (products and services) to meet user needs and align with DWP technical strategy and standards.
  • Provide a consistent set of solution views, that communicate and describe the construction of the solution to all stakeholders.
  • Support delivery teams, blending technical (development and architecture) and behavioural (leadership and communication) skills.
  • Champion solution communication, making the complex simple to understand.



  • Lead, deliver and support the technical architecture design elements of Citizen Information projects / initiatives.
  • Working with engineering teams, and other Digital colleagues, to create VFM solution designs.
  • Own the product architecture, develop product roadmaps and represent product designs at governance forums, providing clear communication of architecture design and decision making, in order to gain approval to proceed with designs.
  • Lead discussions with senior stakeholders to create solution options and recommendations - during project discovery and inception phases.
  • Provide expert advice to other Solution Architects to drive technology choice decisions.
  • To contribute to, and build capability in, the DWP Architecture community.


Priority Technical Skills required

  • Architecture design and modelling techniques, patterns, tools and standards.
  • Public cloud technologies, cloud hosting, container, and networking design patterns, tools and best practice (especially Amazon Web Services).
  • Event-based architecture design, patterns (including pub-sub and data streaming), modelling techniques, tools and standards.
  • Agile / DevOps delivery methodologies and best practice.
  • Shaping and supporting technology initiatives, projects, programmes and portfolios.
  • Conceptual, logical and physical data modelling and design.
  • Technical authoring skills, particularly for the production of technical design and specification documents.
