The Department of Health and Social Care are looking for a Geospatial Data Scientist to use their knowledge and experience of working with Geographic Data to support the Data Science teams

As a Geospatial Data Scientist, you will: 

  • Support the Data Science teams to collect, manage, analyse and share spatial data and be responsible for providing outputs/models in a timely fashion
  • Add value to existing products and develop new solutions using your geospatial skills and expertise
  • Work within the Data Science teams to develop the way we collect, update and utilise data to help the JBC make informed decisions to meet our desired outcomes
  • Engage with partners in wider government, academia and the private sector to gain access to new data sources and information

You’ll have:

  • A track record of working with geographic data and delivering geospatial analysis to a range of customers.
  • Experience in use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), management of geospatial data, and understanding geographic principles and methods.
  • Good understanding and experience in applying statistics and data science techniques to real world problems.
  • Experience with Python and/or R for Data Science including the core scientific Python stack (pandas, numpy, matplotlib etc) and/or R stack (ggplot2, tidyverse etc).
  • Ability to work at pace to deadlines across multiple projects.
  • Ability to effectively communicate the results of your analysis to senior stakeholders and decision makers.
  • Experience cleaning data for machine learning projects.
  • Understanding how to write SQL queries and interact with Databases.
  • Ability to write functions and understandable object orientated code.
  • Experience of working in a fast paced environment.
  • Understanding of software best practice, including confident use of version control using platforms such as Github.

It would be good if you have:

  • Exposure to Dashboarding tools such as PowerBI or Qlik
  • Working with cloud-based platforms (we use AWS, Azure and Databricks)
  • Experience with computational statistics tools and / or Machine Learning frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow
  • Exposure to graph analytics tools (we use NetworkX and GraphX)
