Solutions Architect - Contract 


HMRC is looking for a Solutions Architect - Contract 

This is a REMOTE 12 month initial contract INSIDE IR35 


We need someone to start ASAP. This role is fully remote. The office base can be Leeds/Newcastle/Telford/Liverpool, if you were commutable to that office it would help in the future (after the initial 6 months) but not essential.


HMRC is building a modern, digital tax administration and runs the biggest digital operation in Government, providing digital services for 45 million individuals and 4.9 million business customers.  


We are undergoing a major transformation programme, which includes a major investment in digitisation. This means customers can do more for themselves online, in real time, on computers, tablets and smartphones therefore we are establishing a team of outstanding people who will build and run these new and improved technology services. 


We are seeking an experienced solution architect, to work with Business Analysts and project team throughout the E2E project lifecycle. 


You will:- 

  • Ensure IT designs are fit for purpose, fully meet business requirements, deliver value for money and are compliant with our Architecture Blueprints and IT Strategy.  
  • Ensure traceability mapping from requirements through to logical and solution elements.  
  • Steer and champion IT Designs highlighting benefits, opportunities and future capabilities.  
  • Engage and influence Business Stakeholders, IT Suppliers and other parts of HMRC to support IT designs.  
  • Effectively manage risks, issues and dependencies, including escalation of issues where appropriate.  
  • Engage fully with HMRC governance mechanisms.

  • Strong collaborative skills, including direct experience of influencing business colleagues.  
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.  
  • Ability to build trust and credibility quickly and have the flexibility and willingness to partner with key stakeholders from all areas, both internal and external to HMRC.  
  • Ability to translate technical concepts between software engineering, delivery management, service management and business stakeholders so they are understood by all.  
  • Ability to look beyond the immediate problem and identify wider implications; understanding how work fits into the broader HMRC strategy and historical context.  
  • Ability to work in a challenging environment, remaining patient, level -headed and staying calm under pressure.  
  • Enthusiasm and self-motivation, team player  
  • Knowledge of IT Strategy and Development Lifecycle; Awareness of Business Analysis, Business Process Modelling and Requirement articulation.  
  • Experience of working as an Architect within significant IT Change/Transformation programmes 
  • A sound, broad knowledge of IT, and an understanding of how the architecture specialism relates to other areas of IT and how it impacts on other business functions.  
  • Awareness of Enterprise scale Workflow BPM and data analytics solutions  
  • Application integration and awareness of programming techniques and languages, for example; APIs SOAP, Restful services, XML, JSON, Java, message routing and queuing technology 
  • Awareness of Agile delivery methodologies  
  • Awareness of Cost estimation and modelling 
  • Knowledge of Micro service architectures.  




  • Knowledge and/or experience of Fraud and non-Compliance.  
  • Awareness of Insolvency processes
