Senior Digital Enterprise/ Technical Architect (Inside IR35)

Contract Term: 6 months

Contracting Authority: NHS Digital

Location: Leeds/ Nationwide as is remote

A fantastic opportunity has arisen within NHS Digital for an esteemed leader within Enterprise Architecture to lead the organisation through a huge transformation programme. This role will require a Senior candidate with large scale Enterprise experience, to aid the switch between MS Exchange 13 to MS Office 365. This programme will reach 1.5 million users. The individual will also be supporting the organisation with their network transformation programme. You will work as a Lead Technical Architect within the Technical Architecture Directorate covering The Health and Social Care Network (HSCN)/Future Networks and NHSmail. You will be responsible for the technical governance and strategic planning on these programmes as well as managing a team of Technical Architects. You will be working alongside programme based resources and will be accountable to the Chief Technical Architect (or one of their nominated deputies).

As Senior Digital Enterprise/ Technical Architect you will: 

  • Provide hands-on technical leadership, in the development, operation and ongoing improvement of complex, transformational digital services serving millions of users.
  • Work with product managers to understand user needs for new and existing services.
  • Act as the technical authority in prospective, information gathering and scene setting meetings, evaluate technical proposals from external suppliers, and make implementation recommendations to senior stakeholders.
  • Identify key API requirements for integration with internal and external systems.
  • Lead development of user-driven prototypes to identify technical options and inform architectural approaches, working with colleagues and supplier team members to write tests, code and documentation for new and existing systems.
  • Ensure system architectures are robust, scalable, open and secure, with appropriate overall system design and integration points/APIs, to deliver a high quality user experience.


You’ll be/ have:

  • Infrastructure-focussed lead technical architect with demonstrable expert networking and Office 365 knowledge.
  • Significant Strategy experience leading the creation and review of a systems capability strategy which meets the strategic requirements of the business. Is an influential technologist able to operate confidently with business leads.
  • Leadership evidence of providing clear direction through communicating the strategic vision, adopting a corporate approach and inspiring the TA team to achieve its goals. Experience of making difficult decisions to overcome obstacles, ensuring they are balanced, well researched and thought through.
  • Innovation experience of recognising potential strategic application of Digital Platforms (customer, integration, IOT, mobile, data) , and initiates investigation and development of innovative methods of exploiting IT assets, to the benefit of organisations and the community.
  • Consultancy experience of acting as a single technical point of contact for senior stakeholders and influencers. Significant experience in supporting effective business change by building relationships with and between senior strategists, planners, designers and operational business partners.
  • Significant experience in the provision of specialist knowledge over a range of topics including the role of IT in the business; in own areas of expertise provides advice and guidance influencing the effectiveness of the organisation 's business processes. Proven ability in providing technical advice around specific areas of technology – e.g. Cloud and the use of SAAS, PAAS, IAAS; mobile technology solutions; big data and analytics, inference and AI.
  • Analytical Thinking with a proven ability to decompose a supplier solution design into a set of conceptual and logical IS / IT components that can be mapped against, able to manage complexity, maintaining a grip of dependent components ensuring that multiple parallel developments will work together.

It would also be good if you had:

  • Detailed knowledge of the Health and Social Care Network (HSCN)
  • Detailed knowledge of Exchange 2013/Office 365
  • Knowledge of the NHS
