An exciting opportunity has arisen for the right person to join the Information Services Branch in the role of a Solution Architect. This role plays a crucial role in the successful delivery of the Greater Manchester Police’s Strategic Programmes.

You will initially work largely remotely, and then be based in the pleasant grounds of the GMP Training School in Prestwich, which benefits from free, secure on-campus parking and restaurant facilities, although there is a possibility that the role may move to Old Trafford as part of a Branch relocation exercise

The successful candidate will work closely with the IS Branch, Business and Change Teams to provide solution assurance through the design and governance processes in order to commission new and improved services into production.

As Solution Architect you will:

  • Be responsible for the design and documentation of the architecture at the application layer.
  • Further the Force’s strategic objectives by acting as the application ‘gate-keeper’ for GMP setting out the “roadmap” of complimentary applications mapped against GMP’s business areas and priorities, influencing and guiding future business requirements towards a consistent and forward-looking set of applications.
  • Support the Business and other areas of IS Branch, by translating project requirements, identifying and developing strategically aligned technical solutions, in conjunction with Managed Service Providers, third parties and partner agencies.
  • Develop solution architecture models for projects and plans to drive forward the strategy, taking advantage of opportunities to improve business performance.
  • Provide expert advice on Police IT solutions and how they fit together architecturally across an organisation.
  • Ensure the Branch delivers high quality solutions across a diverse business portfolio. Lead on business functionality best practices and standards, managing and mitigating business functionality related risk in relation to BAU and projects.
  • Maintain knowledge of complex enterprise architecture domains within the organisation, including business, applications, technology, information and others where required.
  • Work with the 3rd party suppliers, partner agencies and internal stakeholders to facilitate the design and agreement of solutions required to meet the Force’s strategic objectives and architecture.
  • Identify the potential impacts of different technological solutions on the organisation and assesses costs & benefits, feasibility and alignment to business requirements. Develop or contribute to business cases and business models to assess solution options.
  • Be responsible for ensuring that requirements are correctly translated into the architecture specification.
  • Assess solution designs to see how they fit into the architecture.
  • Contribute to the discovery and documentation of the customer's business scenarios that drive the solution.
  • Create and update architecture models as a framework for future development.
  • Work with both business and technical stakeholders to understand the organisation’s needs and articulate, in an understandable manner, the solution architecture.
  • Maintain solution architecture documentation.
  • Contribute to evaluation of tenders.
  • Work with architects at the partner agencies to maintain the application architecture layer documentation and forecast future options.


You’ll have:

  • Experience working within an enterprise architecture environment in a complex medium to large sized organisation, ensuring that technical projects align against the organisation strategy, architecture and governance objectives.
  • Significant practical experience of implementing resilient IT applications in a complex multi-vendor environment.
  • Significant experience of reviewing and approving technical specifications and tender responses from third parties.
  • Experience of IT Solutions in policing/public sector (desirable)
  • Experience of high-level solution design, providing strategic solutions to minimise risk and manage down complexity.
  • Experience of working with business process models.
