About the role/project:

To develop and deliver consistent and effective communications strategies for key projects and activities compliant with Network Rail's corporate communication strategy. To manage a broad range of stakeholder communication activities including, media, public affairs, community relations, and internal audiences.

This role heads up the internal communications team and the team produces high-quality content to work across internal and external channels - video, digital and design as well as written copy. The postholder will line manage a communications manager and three communications executives, so as well as the standard skills and experience (below) they will require a strong track record in people management.

What you will do:

  1. Analyse and manage the development and implementation of communication strategies that enable the delivery of the objectives contained in Network Rail's corporate communications strategy
  2. Lead communications activities which present reputational risk or opportunities for the business
  3. Establish and effective network of internal and external contacts and provide direction/influence to senior managers and external industry parties and funding organisations where appropriate.
  4. Where required, provide direct management and development of a team including carrying out regular 121's, appraisals, objective setting, and performance monitoring.
  5. Provide guidance on all external communications activities undertaken by key personnel including Directors, Project Managers, and sponsors, delivering consistency with the approved communications strategy and in accordance with Network Rail's corporate policies.
  6. Assist with delivery of Network Rail's corporate internal communications programme and act as a conduit for material/information for corporate communications channels.
  7. Check that all branding used on the project and activity complies with Network Rail's corporate policy on branding, visual identity and image.
  8. Produce regular reports on all communications activities on the project, including budget.
  9. Implement the major incident communications plan as required.

Essential Skills

  • Substantial experience in corporate communications and reports
  • Ability to coach exec level staff in all aspects of reporting
  • Experience in strategic improvement plans
  • High standards of written and spoken communication
  • The experience and personal credibility to work effectively with senior managers
  • Strong influencing skills
  • Proven ability to grasp, understand and promote complex and sensitive issues in a persuasive and sensible way
  • Ability to develop and maintain a wide network of stakeholder contacts
