Brooks Life Sciences is the leading worldwide provider of robotic compound management and biological sample storage systems.

We have an opportunity for a Software developer with extensive knowledge of Ruby on Rails, this position is offered on a temporary or permanent basis.

Overall Purpose of the Job

To undertake software design, implementation, testing, documentation, installation and commissioning of custom automation system solutions.

Key responsibilities

  • Collaborate with other team members in the software development process.
  • Provide iterative estimates of timescale and resources for specification, implementation and testing of software items
  • Take part in software design discussions and design reviews
  • Prepare and maintain software item specifications
  • Participate take part in software implementation and test reviews, keeping line management informed of project progress, problems and requirements so that they become aware of the impact on their areas and can make appropriate decisions to achieve project objectives.
  • Implement software items according to specification and in line with all relevant and appropriate company (and client specific) standards and procedures.
  • Test software items, with and without associated hardware
  • Be involved in workshop and site development and commissioning of automation systems
  • Tracking of software and system problems, and their solution
  • Participate in on-the-job and off-line training activities
  • Make best use of opportunities provided to continually develop expertise technically and apply this knowledge in the workplace.
  • Take responsibility for the finished code, its documentation and any rectification work. To take responsibility for the checking of their own work prior to the checking of their work by others within the design process.

Skills required

  • Software development experience with extensive knowledge of Ruby on Rails is essential
  • Typically, you will be qualified to first degree level or equivalent in a scientific, engineering or software-related subject.
  • To be proficient in the use of the current in-house version of appropriate PC based design tools (e.g. Visual C++, Visual Basic, Oracle etc.) and to have a working knowledge of standard operating systems and administration software (e.g. Windows, Word, Excel), and be able to work in less conventional languages e.g. V+, GML as required by their role.
