Senior Software Engineer – FORTRAN / OpenVMS Specialist

Location: Wokingham

Work Type: Hybrid - (2-3 Days to office in a week)

 

Role Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer with strong expertise in FORTRAN and OpenVMS to support, maintain, and enhance complex legacy systems. This role requires hands-on experience with mission-critical infrastructure, deep understanding of OpenVMS environments, and the ability to work within tight development cycles to deliver high-quality and reliable code.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Develop and maintain software solutions using FORTRAN, C/C++, DCL, and SQL on OpenVMS systems.

Support and upgrade legacy systems used in engineering, energy, or defense applications.

Design, implement, and optimize system integration, performance, and troubleshooting activities.

Document technical designs, support procedures, test plans, and user documentation.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams in high-security or regulated environments.

Ensure software reliability, maintainability, and system compatibility across upgrades.

 

Essential Skills & Experience:

Proven development experience in FORTRAN, C/C++, DCL, and SQL.

Strong background working on OpenVMS operating systems.

Deep experience in legacy system modernization and maintenance.

Excellent debugging, testing, and problem-solving skills in production environments.

Hands-on experience with Ansible, Puppet, and scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Perl, or Python).

Strong documentation practices and the ability to translate technical details for broader teams.

Exposure to critical national infrastructure (CNI) systems or equivalent high-availability environments.

 

Preferred Skills:

Familiarity with CMS/MMS, Polycenter, and PVCS Tracker for configuration and deployment.

Experience with Oracle, XML, C++ STL, DCE, and multithreading on OpenVMS.

Background in SCADA, radar, subsystems, or military/defense software environments.

Understanding of data center operations, system migrations, and infrastructure tools.

 

Nice to Have:

ITIL, AWS Cloud Practitioner, or relevant industry certifications.

Exposure to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or hybrid UNIX environments.

Understanding of networking, security protocols, or DevSecOps practices.
