The Principal Software Engineer oversees development in the Foundry Software House. This is to ensure appropriate standards and practices are understood and applied correctly. Assuring Government's Service Manual and the Defence Service Manual amongst others are adopted. They'll also lead on technical advice and programming tools and technique standards for our delivery teams.As a Principal Software Engineer your main responsibilities will be to:Be an expert in a broad range of technical areas. Use this knowledge and work with related disciplines to keep multiple teams working effectively.Ensure Government's Service Manual and the Defence Service Manual principles and guidelines are understood and used pragmatically in all Foundry Software House development.Ensure good architectural & technical design practices are adopted and that the Foundry uses architectural patterns consistently.Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define technical plans and ensure alignment with business objectives.Practical involvement in design, developing and quality assurance to maintain a deep understanding of the software development lifecycle and current practices, for example coordinating build activities.Participate in Foundry Software House leadership & management, bringing important technical issues to the forum. Collaborate and inform work on capability and capacity management for software development.Work within MOD digital delivery environment as the interface between Foundry Software House Delivery Teams, Technical Design Authority & Technical Coherence Board.Work with delivery teams and wider Foundry to steer technology roadmap for delivery as well as technology tools.Support, promote and participate in cross-delivery team collaboration to guide and coach others through knowledge sharing and component reuse.Essential:An active SC Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be eligible and willing to undergo these checks.Experience of leading on software development projects and teams.Agile development and delivery experience.Cloud computing experience (AWS, Azure).Experience with a broad range of programming languages (Java, Python, Ruby, Golang etc).Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.Public Sector experience.Desirable:MOD / Defence experience.
