Contract Description

BloombergNEF (BNEF) is a strategic research provider covering global commodity markets and the disruptive technologies driving the transition to a low-carbon economy. We help our clients gain a clear perspective on the trends in technology, finance, policy and economics that are driving transformation across the energy value chain. Our expert coverage assesses pathways for the power, transport, industry, buildings and agriculture sectors to adapt to the energy transition. We help commodity trading, corporate strategy, finance and policy professionals navigate change and generate opportunities. BNEF has 250 staff based in 19 offices across the globe.

We are seeking a highly motivated data analyst to join BNEF's Food and Agriculture team in our London office. The role will initially begin on a 6-month contract with the possibility of extension to longer term employment.

You are a versatile data analyst with an interest in applying your skills to analyze the transition to a more sustainable food and agriculture system. You are an analytical problem solver that enjoys developing expertise on a topic, building models and data driven tools, and producing robust, defendable and well-structured analysis. You will have strong quantitative analysis skills along with an interest in solving problems on complex subjects.

Working in our Food, Agriculture and Nature team, you will play a central role contributing to a large project we will conduct in collaboration with a key multilateral institution. You will help to research, scope and define the data and calculations that will form the evidence base for the project, and shape a methodology that is consistent with the best available science. You will then play a leading role completing the project by conducting primary research, acquiring data, building systems and analyzing the trends you find in the market. You will then collaborate with colleagues to produce high-quality datasets, conduct analysis for a flagship report, produce data-driven tools and visualizations to communicate our findings. Your work will play a key role in catalyzing the investment that is required to drive the transition to a more sustainable food and agriculture system.

We'll Trust You To

  • Develop and maintain expertise in sustainable agriculture data acquisition and analysis
  • Build and maintain sophisticated models and tools that help us to understand, analyze and project the future of the food system
  • Stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices on collecting and building datasets and visualizations
  • Contribute to research reports and presentations
  • Collaborate with colleagues (globally) to deliver high-quality insights and datasets to clients and proactively participate in BNEF data leads initiatives
  • Build automated data collection and cleaning workflows

You’ll Need To Have

  • A degree or equivalent experience in an analytical field, such as science, mathematics, engineering, finance, economics or a related field
  • An interest in efforts to mitigate climate change, reduce biodiversity loss and solve other environmental problems in the food and agriculture system
  • Demonstrated experience in data analysis, cleaning, preparation and transformation techniques
  • Proficiency in Python for data analysis and automation
  • An understanding of SQL for data extraction and querying
  • A natural interest in data visualization and familiarity with PowerBI, QlikSense, Tableau or other data visualization tools
  • Strong quantitative skills; comfortable with large datasets and building Excel models and tools
  • Good communication skills in English: writing (for research reports), reading (to conduct research) and speaking (to communicate your findings to clients and at industry events)
  • Rigorous attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality work

We'd Love To See

  • Basic knowledge of machine learning algorithms
  • Familiarity with datasets in the agriculture, food, climate change, sustainability or environment sectors
  • Skills or experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and tools
  • Foreign language skills
