Senior Interaction Designer

Contract Term: 12 Months

Location: Birmingham, Sheffield, Manchester, Newcastle, Blackpool (Hybrid working)


The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for welfare, pensions, and child maintenance policy. As the UK’s biggest public service department, it administers the State Pension and a range of working age, disability and ill health benefits to around 20 million claimants and customers. As such, we operate on a scale that is almost unmatched anywhere in Europe and most people in Britain come into contact with us at some point in their lives.

Interaction Designers work to understand user journeys and use prototypes to deliver services, products and tools which fulfil user needs. They work alongside other Designers, Front-end Developers, Researchers and Software Engineers to deliver services designed for the people who use them.


As a Senior Interaction Designer your main responsibilities will be: 

  • Understand user needs and leads the design of services, products and tools to meet them 
  • Demonstrate good working knowledge of interaction design in practice 
  • Create and iterate prototypes to test and communicate ideas and help the wider team learn about user needs 
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team in an agile environment to turn concepts into user-centred designs 
  • Manage team workload and design approach across deliverables 
  • Understand as-is interaction design and identify improvement opportunities 
  • Use typography and affordance to improve user experience  
  • Ensure that the design of services is consistent, both internally and with the rest of GOV.UK, across multiple work streams 
  • Deliver and promote best practices around user-centred design processes, user research and experience design 
  • Identify and understand constraints and able to work within them 
  • Work across both digital and non-digital platforms to create the best possible user experience 
  • Understand the bigger picture (high-level flows and processes) as well as the fine detail of individual parts 
  • Contribute to building an open and collaborative culture within the department and the design community 
  • Actively provide support and mentor team members 
  • Analyse and identify cost saving opportunities whilst implementing best practice interaction design  
  • Lead workshops to drive actionable outcomes 
  • Support recruitment for the DWP Digital Product design community 
  • Manage stakeholder needs across different areas with a focus on supporting discussions at senior departmental level 
  • Support the capability and promote interaction design in and beyond the department
