Digital Product Manager – Inside IR35

Contract Term: 12 Months

Contracting Authority: Department for Work and Pensions

Location: Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Newcastle, Birmingham or Blackpool (2 days per week)

 

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for welfare, pensions, and child maintenance policy. As the UK’s biggest public service department, it administers the State Pension and a range of working age, disability and ill health benefits to around 20 million claimants and customers. Description:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and empathetic Product Manager who is confident working in a complex environment and can lead their delivery team to drive the best outcomes for our users and the taxpayer.

 

You will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary team working across organisation boundaries to deliver, through agile methodologies, new and evolving products and services which meet policy intent, users’ needs and Government Digital Service Standards to deliver the best outcomes for DWP colleagues.

 

As a Product Manager, you will manage the development of a product. You will be responsible for strategic and tactical product decisions, using your knowledge of user needs and business goals to frame problems and set priorities for the delivery team. You will also be actively involved in developing the product strategy and managing the product roadmap.

 

 

Summary of Role and Key Responsibilities:

  • Understand and translate the mission – You will need to understand and communicate with teams and stakeholders how the problem you are solving contributes to achieving our mission.
  • Product Management - Define the minimum viable product and work with the product team(s) to agree candidates for release, defining delivery plans and communicating progress to the wider business as appropriate.
  • Lifecycle Management - Maintain and iterate a product over time to continuously meet user needs.
  • Managing product backlogs - Create the list of backlog items and prioritise them based on the overall strategy and business objectives.
  • User focused - Act as the voice of all users (citizen and business) during development and stabilisation.
  • Agile - Ability to work in a fast paced, evolving environment and utilises an iterative method and flexible approach to enable rapid delivery.

Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Product Management - Understands tools, terms and concepts used to deliver a product and how they can be adapted and applied to different phases of delivery.
  • Strategic Insight - Understands what problem the team is trying to solve. Can align user research activities to inform decision making and action. 
  • Lifecycle perspective - Recognises when to move from one stage of a product lifecycle to another. Ensures the team is working towards the appropriate service standards for the relevant phase. Able to manage the delivery products or services at different phases.

  • Communicating and influencing - Communicate in a straightforward, honest and engaging manner, choosing appropriate styles to maximise understanding and impact, encouraging the use of different.
  • communication methods, including digital resources and highlight the benefits, including ensuring cost effectiveness, always ensuring communication has a clear purpose and considers people’s individual needs. 
  • Leadership - Ensure colleagues and stakeholders have a clear understanding of objectives, activities and timeframes, considering different individual needs, views, and ideas, championing inclusion and equality of opportunity for all and considering the impacts of own

  • Have made effective decisions based on incomplete information using a range of techniques.
  • Have prioritised backlogs based on user needs, business values and expected return on investment.
  • Desirable to have created and communicated a product roadmap, receiving and acting upon challenge from stakeholders.
  • Desirable to have successfully delivered one or more components/features meeting several successful outcomes.
  • Desirable to have worked in a multifunctional team, developing products using iterative techniques.
